Created by ICANN back in 2002, the « .PRO » is a highly protected generic extension that refers to professionals.
At that time the «. Pro » extension was only reserved for professionals practising an activity on American territory and concerned only four professions : accountants, engineers, lawyers and doctors.
By 2008, the «. Pro » has become accessible to all legal professions, and the eligibility of applicants has been extended to the whole world. This new policy has increased the number of registrations.
As of November 2015, .PRO domain names can be registered by anyone.
